Physical Characteristics of the Disease Thygeson’s Superficial Punctate Keratitis

There are certain physical characteristics of the disease Thygeson’s Superficial Punctate Keratitis or Thygeson’s Superficial Punctate Keratopathy or TSPK that appear in many eye patients. Even though victims may not see the lumps forming on the cornea on their eye or eyes there are other symptoms that can trigger a trip to their eye doctor.

Victims of TSPK report pain emanating from their eye or eyes.  While watery eyes have been documented, this symptom can be identified due to patients rubbing their eyes vigorously because in nearly all cases the eye or eyes are very dry.  Nearly all patients tell people that there is something in their eye. They cannot separate themselves from the feeling that there is something too small to see lodged on the eye.  Photophobia is a common complaint where the sufferer experiences a level of discomfort when they are exposed to bright light. It can be ordinary sunlight or artificial lighting that triggers a painful response in the individual.  Redness in the eyes can be mistaken for being up too late, allergies, or many other causes. People with TSPK nearly always complain of redness in the eyes.  Another physical trait of TSPK is blurred vision and may be noticed when reading, driving, or simply looking at an inanimate object.

The physical characteristics of Thygeson’s Superficial Punctate Keratitis are well documented but the exact cause or causes of TSPK continue to elude the medical profession around the world.  The greatest speculation about the potential cause of the disease, over the decades, falls into the categories of genetic or autoimmune.  The medical community has tried many types of research models to nail down the cause or causes of this disease and yet the truth is that no one can prove the cause.
