Thygeson’s Superficial Punctate Keratopathy (TSPK) Disease Staging

While no one in the worldwide medical community has proven what causes TSPK, they have been able to agree what consists of the major characteristics and when the disease is active or inactive in people. There have been vast amounts of testing, experiments, and collaborations between doctors from different fields of expertise to try to unlock the secrets of TSPK. There is a large body of documentation that has allowed medical professionals to understand TSPK and how to diagnose the symptoms that can be misinterpreted sometimes.

When TSPK is active, it can be uncomfortable and even painful. Some of the characteristics include frequent bilateral punctate inflammation in some patients, lengthy periods of symptoms being present at all times, and a failure to respond to antibiotic treatments. This can include blurred vision, a burning sensation in the eyes, feeling like some object is lodged in the eye, or chronically dry eyes.

TSPK can also go inactive for months, years and sometimes forever. Sometimes patients with severe lesions are treated with topical steroids for a period, and then weaned off the treatment. The steroid treatment can continue with follow up treatment in inactive patients after a few months or even a year to ward off a recurrence of the condition.

Remember that this condition can come and go on an unpredictable schedule and that recurring TSPK is common. The troublesome numbers for someone with this ailment to hear is that while the average TSPK patient averages about four years of dealing with this pesky problem; some patients have had it come and go for 20 years or more. The great hope most people experiencing TSPK is that they will fall among the average and not be the exception.
